Head-to-Head Matchups of WIN’s Top-10 Ranked wrestlers

Quarterfinal Highlights

  • #1 Spencer Lee (Iowa) major dec. #8 Devin Schroder (Purdue), 10-2 — In a rematch of the Big Ten final, Schroder actually tied the bout 2-2 midway through the second period and only trailed 3-2 before the Hawkeye gained control in the third period with a reversal, four-point nearfall and riding time.
  • #4 Drew Hildebrandt (Central Michigan) dec. #5 Brody Teske (Northern Iowa), 4-2 sv — The Chippewa completed his rally by scoring a second takedown with 17 seconds left in the sudden victory period. This came after Hildebrandt forced OT by scoring a takedown with seven seconds left in regulation. The Panther used a second-period reversal to lead 2-0.
  • #3 Brandon Courtney (Arizona State) dec.  #6 Jakob Camacho (NC State), 4-2 — The Sun Devil trailed 1-0 after two periods before he escaped and scored the lone takedown with 1:30 left before adding a riding time point.
  • #7 Taylor Lamont (Utah Valley) dec. #2 Sam Latona (Virginia), 7-4 — Lamont scored a takedown and two-point as the first period ended to lead 4-0. After a challenge, the call was upheld. The Cavalier was able to cut the margin to 6-4 on an takedown with 28 seconds left before Lamont added a riding time point.

Second Round Notes

  • Top-ranked Spencer Lee of Iowa advanced to the quarterfinals as expected as the two-time champion defeated West Virginia’s Killian Cardinale, 15-5 for his second bonus point victory of the tournament. But the Mountaineer showed that the Hawkeye All-American is human by scoring a pair of takedowns: one in the second period to cut margin to 10-2 and the second coming in the third period after Lee led 13-3.
  • Lee will face Purdue’s Devin Schroeder in Friday morning’s quarterfinals after the Boilermaker edged Michigan State’s Rayvon Foley, 2-1. Lee is coming of a Big Ten championship win over Schroder two weeks ago.
  • Northern Iowa’s edged Northwestern’s Michael DeAugustino, 2-0, as the No. 8 seed scored his points off a third-period escape and a riding point after controlling the Wildcat the entire second period.
  • Arizona State’s No. 3 Brandon Courtney edged Wisconsin’s Eric Barnett, 9-7. The Sun Devil used three first-period takedowns to lead 6-3 and was up 8-4 entering the third period when the Badger benefitted from a pair of stalling points against the Sun Devil.
  • NC State’s Jakob Camacho advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Michigan’s Dylan Ragusin, 10-8, but not before the Wolverine freshman scored a pair of nearfall points against the Wolfpack wrestler. Camacho led 4-3 after two periods before scoring a takedown and reversal in the third period.
